Why Low Net Carb?

The premise behind low net carb lifestyle is that when carbohydrate intake is reduced, the body primarily burns fat for fuel, which leads to weight loss. The physiological impact of a low net carb lifestyle extends beyond mere weight loss. Understanding its affect on our overall health is also important.

Not all carbohydrates are metabolized by the body in the same manner and as such their impact on blood sugar levels differ. Elevated blood sugar levels result in the release of insulin which in turn facilitates the storage of the sugar in the form of fat. It is for this reason insulin is often referred to as the “fat storage hormone.” Carbohydrates such as cane, beet sugar and readily digestible starches elevate blood sugar levels whereas carbohydrates such as certain sugar alcohols, glycerine and dietary fiber have little to no impact on blood sugar levels.

Maintaining a proper blood sugar level is important not only for effective weight management but it is also important in reducing insulin resistance which can lead to the onset of type II diabetes. Insulin resistance occurs when blood sugar levels are constantly elevated. Elevated blood sugar results in the release of insulin. It is believed that over time the receptor sites of our body’s cells begin to become “worn out” and less responsive to insulin. As a result, blood sugar levels continue to rise, leading to a host of health problems affecting the liver, kidney and other vital organs as the body struggles to cope with excessive sugar in the bloodstream. A person living a low net carb lifestyle seeks out foods that have little impact on blood sugar levels; these foods are said to have a low glycemic load.
